"Mayor Bloomberg's administration and the City Council were set to announce regulations Tuesday [today] that will require building owners to inspect and all surrounding apartments of any unit that has the bloodsucking pests."This is a rule which will be effective for landlords that have infestations in their buildings currently. Not only that, but this is just one part of a new set of regulations for landlords that will require them to notify all tenants in the building if there are bed bugs, and to enforce a pest-fighting plan. Lastly, they will also be required to hire a licensed exterminator to sign a sworn affidavit that the bed bugs are being treated.
Victory! Well, hopefully.
We're obviously excited to see that this thorough piece of legislation will be rolling into place. We most certainly hope that the people who drafted it did their bed bug-related research, and have included details in this docket of what constitutes a "licensed" exterminator. Also, that they included terms of enforcement for the part of required notification to tenants about bed bugs in their building. Additionally, will buildings with differing amounts of units be subject to different types of enforcement of these laws? For instance, a 10-unit building vs. 100-unit building? And what exactly constitutes a "pest-fighting" plan as it relates to these terms?
All of that aside, these new laws can only mean good things for New Yorkers that are either dealing with, or trying to prevent bed bugs (aren't we all!?). We'll keep our ears to the ground in seeking out further details about these new laws. Stay tuned!
